“The way to do is to be.” -Lao Tzu
The need for therapeutic yoga is increasing as more people are looking to yoga to improve their overall wellness.
However, the style of yoga most commonly taught and practiced in American yoga studios does not always serve individuals with differing levels of fitness, skills, or abilities. A therapeutic yoga class is designed to serve the individual needs and goals of each person in the room while helping them to stay motivated to practice.
In order to to teach yoga in a therapeutic way, knowledge and skills beyond postural technique and asana sequencing are required. What distinguishes a therapeutic environment is the intention to provide an inclusive classroom environment that also honors the unique needs and desires of each individual student.
This training will help teachers and practitioners alike learn strategic methodologies and practical communication skills necessary to make yoga more inclusive and accessible to a wider variety of people with different bodies, needs, and abilities.
If you want to: feel confident teaching students facing various challenges, injures, or ailments; teach classes that are spiritually uplifting; expand your skillset to reach a new or larger audience of people, all while deepening your own yoga practice and self-discovery, then sign up for this training immediately!

WHY THIS TRAINING?
Let’s face it: the standard 200, 300 or 500 hour yoga training can only offer so much. Most teachers learn the essentials of an asana practice geared towards bodies that are relatively physically fit and humans who are mentally and emotionally available for a rigorous physical practice. While these techniques are the meat and potatoes (or kale and quinoa) of a yoga teacher’s repertoire, the pedagogical knowledge of how to present the material is not always there. You want to be your best self when you show up for your students: to know how and when to approach your student who is challenged by serious injury or illness, and what to say or not to say. You want to confidently stand in front of a room full of students with different bodies, needs, and abilities: to feel empowered to embrace a student with a broken heart, hip or immune system, to offer an “assist” that will help your student feel safe mentally, physically, and energetically.
You know through your own practice and discovery that yoga supports your own well-being. And you know that learning HOW to support others on this journey requires more than just being able to teach others to do Tree Pose or Warrior 2. In this training, you will build upon the skills in your own yogic toolbox while strengthening your deep listening and communication abilities that allow you to be a confident and compassionate teacher.

WHO ARE YOUR TEACHERS ?
This training will be led by Evalena Leedy and Hannah Gruber. Both known for their deep empathy, compassion, and active listening, they are both experienced Yoga Teachers with 1000’s of hours of training and practical experience teaching therapeutic yoga classes to students of all ages and backgrounds, with many types of serious or chronic health challenges.
Evalena Leedy is know for her patience, generosity, kindness, and enthusiasm. In 2009, she opened YogaSole, a yoga studio in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, with the intention to serve the community who lived there. She recognized the need to provide yoga classes that reflected the desires of the students, and has become one of the only studios in New York City offering primarily therapeutic and gentle yoga, restorative, and Yoga TuneUp classes.
Since she was 16, when she began mopping floors in the ICU, Evalena has always worked with people in her life who are learning to heal. E teaches from her own Intuition, listening deeply to the needs of her students while tuning into her own knowledge and experience. Her personal practice is informed by her living study of the yoga sutras, and other ancient texts, her daily meditation practice, as well as her yoga training. She is “a practitioner who invites students to find their own path”. Students who attend her weekly therapeutic class walk away feeling empowered to heal themselves.
Hannah Gruber is a healer of many kinds: a longtime yoga teacher, Ayurvedic private chef, Holistic Health Counselor, Clairvoyant healer, and passionate learner, Hannah weaves yogic philosophy and intuition throughout everything she does. Intuition is learning how to listen more deeply for the secrets of life. Playful and curious at heart, Hannah has always questioned the state of affairs. Her motto is difficult things can always be made more doable, and the doable can always be made more difficult.
She is known for offering therapeutic classes that are structured and challenge people where they’re at; her students walk away feeling more calm and confident. Hannah self-identifies as a healer who helps her students learn how to heal themselves.

THE COURSE CONTENT
The topic of yoga as a therapeutic practice is broad in scope. A complete training would require hundreds of hours on many different topics.
In this 25 -hour foundational course we will focus on methods for deeper listening in your own practice that will sharpen your awareness so you can continue to hone wisdom in your own practice, while strengthening your adaptability, compassion, and empathy. Specific communication tactics, both verbal and non-verbal, necessary for creating a practice environment that is safe, welcoming, and supportive to each of your students’ unique growth.
Over the course of this 6-day training, you will learn through lecture, discussion, personal practice, observation, and hands-on experience. Homework exercises and suggested reading will be assigned so you can continue to develop what you learn at home “on your own mat”.
Specifically, this training will teach:
We will focus on various aspects comprising the 8 Limbs of yoga (excluding the yamas, niyamas, asana, and samadhi, as we feel those topics are discussed at length in foundational trainings.) These limbs (Pranayama, Pratyhara, Dharana, Dhyana) provide a non-hierarchical template for practicing and experiencing the many health-giving benefits of yoga. Many students gain valuable tools and results from learning how to breathe or withdrawal of their senses for example, without ever needing to perform Downward Dog.
Great teaching draws from your own experience: in this training you will take a deeper dive into these important practices to discover how to teach these skills using your own authentic voice. It takes discipline—both taking the time and putting in the effort—to develop these skills; and it takes deeper inquiry--both exploration and questioning--for these skills to become wisdom. Whether you are teaching or practicing for self-healing, this will be a serious exploration and opportunity to expand.
